Western Treatment Plant
 |
Melbourne Water's Western Treatment Plant at Werribee is a significant and fascinating
public asset, with more than 100 years of history.
The Western Treatment Plant is more than 11,000 hectares in area and is a world
leader in environmentally-friendly sewage treatment.
The Western Treatment Plant continues to provide an essential public health service,
treating about 52% of Melbourne's sewage, or about 485 million litres a day.
Things to do
-
Melbourne Water provides open days and tours of the Western Treatment Plant. Tours
show interested groups how sewage is treated, how methane gas is used to generate
electricity for the plant, what we're doing to increase water recycling and what
we're doing to reduce the nitrogen input to Port Phillip Bay.

-
The Melbourne Water Discovery Centre is an interactive exhibit on all aspects of
the water cycle. The exhibit looks at where our water comes from, what goes on in
the city beneath us and what happens to the water we flush down the toilet and pour
down the sink.
-
Bird Watching - the Western Treatment Plant provides a haven for tens of thousands
of birds and is recognised as one of the world's most significant wetlands. Note:
Access to Melbourne Water's Western Treatment Plant for bird watching or fishing
is by permit only.
